Bolletje history
Gerardus Johannes ter Beek (1843-1933) started a bakery shop at the Grotestraat in Almelo at the end of 1867 , in a building that his father Albertus Antonius (1802-1868), who was a bread merchant, had before him before his death. purchased. This company would be the start of a family business that would become known from the mid- 20th century under the name Bolletje.

Gerardus' son Albert (1877-1958) continued the business of his father, but concentrated more on baking rusks . Already in the twenties he deposited these rusks with his tricycle into Deventer . His wife was in the bakery shop in Almelo. Today the Bolletje Winkel & Koffieschenkerij and the bakery museum De Meelzolder are located in this building. The couple had five sons and two daughters who initially all started working in the family business. The oldest son Gerard ter Beek (1915-2006) became responsible for the bakery. After the Second World War, it was decided to tackle the biscuit production to a great extent.

In 1954 the five brothers started an industrial bakery at the Turfkade in Almelo. Johannes Antonius (Jan) ter Beek (1916-2006) was the initiator to change the brand name "Ter Beek's Beschuit". Brother Gerard came up with the name "Bolletje". Bolletje developed into the country's largest biscuit producer, thanks in part to a sophisticated advertising policy by Jan ter Beek, with the cooperation of advertising agency De Zuil from Enschede. The company became famous for the advertising saying: "I want Bolletje!", Later proclaimed the advertising slogan of the twentieth century. In 1962, collaboration with the bakers company Bachman Bakeries , also based in Almelo, specialized in the production of pretzels.

In 1975, Arks Bakkerijen BV was taken over in Heerde. In 1978 a new rye bread factory was opened in Almelo. After that many other companies were bought up, such as Tumro from Roermond, Smarius from Tilburg, Meursing from Amersfoort and Schriek's Koekfabriek from Oosterhout . In 1983 the Varopa brand was bought up. In 1994, Kelderman Broodspecialiteiten BV was taken over from Naarden and in 2000 Jaffa Bakkerijen BV from Amsterdam followed.
