The first cooperatives
The roots of CO-OP go back to the end of the nineteenth century. Factory workers then revolted against the low wages, high prices and poor quality of food. They started shops as a cooperative. Here they sold food to members at reasonable prices. There were more and more of these stores coming up. Firstly locally, but through regional mergers, regional cooperatives also emerged.

In the sixties the department stores came. This made it increasingly necessary for cooperative stores to join forces and thus achieve a stronger position. An attempt was made to unite all local and regional consumer cooperatives in Co-op Netherlands.

Unfortunately, the bundling of forces started too late. That was why it went wrong in 1973: the shops and production companies of Coop Nederland came into the hands of the competitors.
