Large vintage round storage tin "Aap, Noot, Mies"

A very nice big high round tin drum with images of the famous Dutch 'reading board': Ape, Nut, Mies. Equipped with separate loose lid.

This tin is in a nice vintage condition with some traces of use.

As children, most Dutch learned to write and speak at school with this row of words and names. The youngsters don’t learn this anymore, but older people, above 60 will probably still know it, as it’s a true Dutch classic.

A 'reading board' most with the words Aap, Noot, Mies (Ape, nut, and a girls name) is a wooden board of Dutch origin with images and the corresponding words. It is the best-known example of a so-called reading board in the Netherlands.

Reading board
A reading board is a tool for learning to read. It consists of a board with one or more ridges on which the letters of the word that are depicted above the ridge can be placed. It is in line with the 'sound method' introduced around 1800, in which children pronounce the letters of a word in succession as they should sound, ie aa-p, nn-oo-t, mm-ie-ss, and thus learn to read the word. The reading board helps, because the student puts the letters and thus sees the word arise. The sound method meant a great improvement over the 'game method' used until then, in which the pupil spells a word by reading the letters as they are called, so aa-pee for ape, and -oo-tee for a note and a note. ie-es for mies. A reading board is designed so that the words on the shelf contain the most important letters and sounds.
