Old candy tin from Mackintosh's Quality Street, 1940/1959

Old candy tin from Mackintosh's Quality Street, 1940/1959.

  • Manufacturing date: 1940/1959

Round tin drum with a deepening loose lid and images of a soldier with a pink dressed girl for "Quality Street" (toffee and chocolate) from Mackintosh.

This vintage English candy box from "Mackintosh's Quality Street Chocolates & Toffees" was made by John Mackintosh & Sons, Halifax, England. The lid is decorated with the well-known scene of a British soldier in uniform who is offered sweets by a young lady in Victorian clothing style. On the tin itself are various images that take place in an expensive shopping street, such as a boy with a hoop and a horse and carriage.

On the images on the tin you can see the Napoleonic era (the late 1800s until the early 1900s). A period full of nostalgia. This 70-year-old tin is in a beautiful old vintage condition and is a true collector's item.

This tin shows traces of wear due to use and age. The bottom of the tin shows traces of oxidation, the inside is clean.

The origin of the lady and soldier who for decades have been the image for the chocolate toffees of Mackintosh is surprising. They are in fact characters from a play called 'Quality Street'. This piece was written by J.M. Barrie, the creator of Peter Pan. Apparently, the play inspired the sweet makers of Mackintosh so much that she immediately mentioned the name of their then new product.

  • Height: 9 cm.
  • Diameter: 18.2 cm.

Quality Street
Quality Street is the brand name of a series of sweets.

Quality Street was created in 1936 by the company Mackintosh's and named after the eponymous play by James Barrie, which was then filmed. Quality Street is distributed by Nestlé.

The sweets exist in 14 varieties and are each individually wrapped in blue, green, purple, brown, yellow, red, orange and pink paper. Each type has its own filling. Quality Street exists in round cans, drums and in hexagonal cardboard boxes. On the drum is a picture of two characters from the play.
