Rattan is a material that comes from the rattan palm (Calamus rotang). It mainly occurs in tropical rainforests. By far the most types of rattan are climbers. There are many different types of rattan. They occur mainly in the Malay Archipelago, but also on the Indian subcontinent, at the foot of the Himalayas, South China, Sri Lanka, Australia and in the western part of the Pacific to Fiji. Some species grow in Central Africa.

The thickness of a rattan stem varies from three millimeters to nearly ten centimeters and the length varies in a full-grown form from ten centimeters to two hundred meters. They grow from sea level to 3000 meters above sea level.

For example, baskets and furniture are made from the harvested stems by weaving techniques. Rattan furniture is occasionally popular and serves, for example, as garden furniture or furniture in a conservatory.

The core of the stems, which, unlike bamboo, is solid, is also cut into various thicknesses and is then called (wicker) reeds. The harder outer layer, the bark of the rattan stems, is cut in different widths to make turns, bindings, and wickerwork (including chair seats). It is sometimes also called "cane".
