Perfetti Van Melle is a worldwide operating confectionery manufacturer.

Van Melle began around 1840 as a bakery at Breskens. They also sold sugar balls. In 1900, Izaak van Melle also began to produce this automatically by using machines. About 1920, Izaak's brother Dirk-Machiel started a factory for biscuits and waffles, including the famous Dutch Maria biscuit (Mariakaakje).

They search Internationally for recipes and from 1926, toffees were manufactured, as well as the fruit caramel and peppermint caramel introduced from Poland. These sweets are still popular throughout the world under the names Fruittella and Mentos. The company found markets far beyond the limits and in 1935 even the first company aircraft of the Netherlands, the Double Eagle, was purchased. On September 11, 1944, however, Breskens was heavily bombarded by the Allies, which also destroyed the factory. In 1946, production was restarted in Rotterdam. In the eighties of the 20th century, the company moved to Breda, where about 650 people worked.
