Parafinn stove
A paraffin stove is a stove that uses petroleum as fuel. With the arrival of city gas, butane gas and later natural gas, this method of cooking has virtually disappeared.

The device consists of an enameled reservoir for the petroleum, in which one or more pits are suspended. A wick is an approximately 7 cm wide cotton band that sucks the fuel up. The reservoir is covered with an enameled plate (the pith container) which is provided with one or more chimney-shaped, often 7 cm long slots, through which the pits pass and which can be adjusted in height by means of the rotating devices arranged therein. An enameled attachment (the chalice) is placed on top of the reservoir. On top of that, a grid or truss has been placed on which the pan or kettle can be placed. In the front of the chalice, there is a glass hole covered with glass, through which the height of the flame can be checked. The wick can be turned upwards so that the flame burns higher and more heat is released. However, if it is too high, the flame starts to smoke: producing soot. Before the flame is extinguished, the pit is turned downwards until the flame goes out.

A paraffin burner is ideally suited for simmering, among other things, stew and stewed pears.
