KING peppermint is traditionally produced in the Tonnemafabriek in Sneek. The brand has been owned by candy multinational Cloetta since 2012, which then merged with the originally Dutch Leaf International.

In 1902 the sugar-making company Tonnema was founded in Sneek. That made peppermint for various customers in different qualities and flavors. In the twenties, this approach was abandoned and opted for a strict brand and quality policy. In 1922 the own brand was deposited: KING, the king of the peppermint. KING stood for Quality In Nothing Unmatched. The peppermint was no longer sold separately, from 1927 onwards, the roles that were hand-worked in the first years were "complicated".

Tonnema, like other producers, called his peppermint "extra strong". From the thirties onwards, this designation was no longer used, although the taste remained the same. In 1993, in addition to the ordinary taste, a real "extra strong" arrived; this was called "a combination between power and delicious" by the manufacturer.

Initially, peppermint was popular as a medicinal remedy for tickling cough or dry mouth. For KING peppermint it was advertised as "stimulating and invigorating as a beneficent medicine". The quality was checked by the "Laboratory for Chemical and Microscopic Research: Dr. Paul François van Hamel Roos, Advisors for Chemical and Hygienic Affairs of the House of H.M. de Koningin". Doctor Van Hamel Roos, pharmacist and analyst in Amsterdam, checked the quality several times a year. He lived on the Keizersgracht and had his chemical laboratory there. Later, the government took over this type of inspections with the TNO. Due to a legal prohibition the predicate "medicinal" disappeared from the packaging. What remained is the face of doctor Van Hamel-Roos, which is still on every roll of KING peppermint.
