Description
Large round tin drum for mackintosh Quality Street toffees from the 1960s - 1970s. The decoration of this tin consists of a white background with grey details. On the lid a picture of a soldier in costume and a young lady dressed in purple, a dog and in the background a boy with a hoop. On the side of the tin a self-repeating panorama of the lady and soldier in a carriage with a horse, walking and cycling in an English street. Further adorned with the text "Mackintosh Quality Street".
The origin of the lady and soldier who for decades have been the image for the chocolate toffees of Mackintosh is surprising. They are in fact characters from a play called 'Quality Street'. This piece was written by J.M. Barrie, the creator of Peter Pan. Apparently, the play inspired the sweet makers of Mackintosh so much that she immediately mentioned the name of their then new product.

Quality Street is the brand name of a series of sweets in the shape of chocolates.
Quality Street was created in 1936 by the company Mackintosh's and named after the eponymous play by James Barrie, which was then filmed. Quality Street is now being distributed by Nestlé.
Quality Street exists in round tin drums and in rectangular cardboard boxes. On the tins is often a picture of two characters from the play. The main color is always purple.
Mackintosh Toffee is a candy made by John Mackintosh.
Mackintosh opened his candy store in Halifax, Yorkshire in England in 1890. The idea for Mackintosh Toffee, not too hard and not too soft, came shortly thereafter. In 1969, Mackintosh's joined with rival Rowntree to continue as Rowntree Mackintosh, which merged with Nestlé again in 1988.
