Van Nelle was a Dutch manufacturer of rolling tobacco, cigarettes, coffee and tea.

In 1782 Johannes van Nelle and his wife Hendrica started a shop in coffee, tea, and tobacco at the Leuvehaven in Rotterdam. After the death of Johannes van Nelle in 1811, his widow continued the store. In 1813 the widow also died. Son Johannes van Nelle Jr. and his brother-in-law Abraham Goedkoop continued the business under the name De Erven de Wed. J. van Nelle (the heirs of the widow). After the death of Johannes van Nelle jr. The Van der Leeuw family took a share in the firm in 1837. From 1845 Van Nelle was entirely in the hands of the Van der Leeuw family.

Jacobus Johannes van der Leeuw built the company between 1837 and 1881. He established worldwide trade contacts, established his own plantations in the Dutch East Indies and built the shop into a coffee roasting factory and the processing of tobacco and tea. Around the turn of the century, coffee and tea became increasingly important. Van Nelle, therefore, made a great profit.

The company distinguished itself through its own approach, with appealing advertising figures such as Piggelmee. The period around the Second World War was difficult for Van Nelle. But from the fifties on, under the direction of director J.P. Coelingh it did better again.

Jac. Jongert (Wormer 1883 - Reeuwijk 1942
Jongert followed his education at the Quellinus Amsterdam Arts and Crafts School from 1899 to 1902, a 1902-03 year at the Rijksschool voor Kunstnijverheid in Amsterdam and then 1903-04 at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunst, also in Amsterdam. He was a student of Richard Roland Holst.

From 1918 to 1940 he was a major teacher at the Department of Decorative Arts and Crafts at the Academy of Fine Arts and Technological Sciences in Rotterdam.

He was a versatile artist who, besides drawing, was a designer for carpets, wallpaper, furniture, stained-glass and printing. From 1923 to 1940 he was in charge of the advertising department of Van Nelle in Rotterdam, where he made the famous designs for the packaging of tea, coffee and tobacco.
