Vintage tin with Dutch coat of arms, Je maintiendrai. 

Description
Rectangular vintage tin with a hinged lid and rounded corners. On the lid a nice decoration of the Dutch coat of arms with underneath the motto "Je maintiendrai" (I will maintain).

The whole is embossed and has the colors red blue and black on a silver background. Details of flowers and ornate lines.

The tin box itself is also embossed with a beautiful leaf motif and red details.

Condition
This old tin is in a very good condition with no significant traces of use or age-related traces of wear.

Je maintiendrai (Dutch: I will maintain) is the motto of the Netherlands since 1815.

The motto is, in fact, the motto of the House of Orange-Nassau, which William of Orange inherited with the Principality of Orange through the legacy of René of Chalon. Originally the motto was Je maintiendrai Chalon, but Willem changed her to Je maintiendrai Nassau. After a while, he left Nassau out and this simply became Je maintiendrai.

During the Republic (1581-1795) the motto Concordia res PARVAE Crescunt was used (ie: United we stand, also the motto of Belgium after the Belgian Revolution in 1830, or in French: L'union fait la force). When the House of Orange gained more power in 1815 and the head of the family was promoted from sovereign to sovereign prince to king, the United Kingdom of the Netherlands took over the motto of the Oranges. The Netherlands retained it after the separation of the Low Countries in 1830.

The motto is also that of three knight orders; the Order of the Golden Lion of Nassau, the Order of the Oak Crown and the Order of Orange-Nassau.
