Description
Trivets. Disk of braided raffia.

Set of three original vintage trivets from the 60s and 70s and made from raffia. These still very popular trivets come in various shapes and colours. The raffia is rolled up and has different colours that create a geometric pattern. Raffia is a material reminiscent of wicker. These braided raffia discs are usually rotated from a centre point and braided along from around that point.

These trivets are traditionally used to place under a hot pan, in order to protect the table or countertop from the heat of the pan. Not only extremely functional, but also very decorative.

In colour combinations of orange, yellow, green, blue, brown, red, pink.

Condition
These original trivets from the 1960s - 1970s are in a vintage condition with traces of use and age-related traces of wear. The colours are often somewhat faded.

Raffia palms (Raphia) are a genus of about twenty species of palms native to tropical regions of Africa, and especially Madagascar, with one species (R. taedigera) also occurring in Central and South America. R. taedigera is the source of raffia fibers, which are the veins of the leaves.

Raffia fibre is widely used throughout the world. It is used in twine, rope, baskets, placemats, hats, shoes, and textile.

The fibre is produced from the membrane on the underside of each individual frond leaf. The membrane is taken off to create a long thin fibre which can be dyed and woven as a textile into products ranging from hats to shoes to decorative mats.

Plain raffia fibres are exported and used as garden ties or as a "natural" string in many countries. Especially when one wishes to graft trees, raffia is used to hold plant parts together as a more "natural" rope.

Raffia fibres have many uses.
