Vintage antique round toffee or candy tin by Van Melle.

  • Manufacturer: Breskens Holland
  • Date of manufacture: approx. 1920

Description
Beautiful antique large-sized shop tin by "Van Melle". This tin was used for packaging and storing toffees. The tin has a loose lid with a rolled edge. The tin drum itself also has a rolled edge on the top and bottom. At the rear, there is a seamed longitudinal seam.

The decoration of this tin consists of a dark red background with golden details and decorations. On the lid is a beautiful nostalgic image of a young woman with a yellow rose. This is probably a portrait made by the English painter John William Waterhouse (Rome, 6 April 1849 - London, 10 February 1917).

Furthermore, on the edge of the lid and on the side of this tin can, a number of images of some rugged English landscapes can be seen. The entire drum is surrounded with golden decorative decorations, and a textual print with: "Van Melle's Toffees Superieure Kwaliteit".

At the bottom of the tin is the logo of the "Van Melle" factory.

Condition
This tin drum is in a very nice original vintage condition with normal age-related traces of use and wear.

Van Melle started around 1840 as a bakery in Breskens. This also sold sugar balls. In 1900 Izaak van Melle also started to produce it mechanically. Around 1920, Isaac's brother Dirk-Machiel started a factory for biscuits and waffles, including the Mariakaakje.

They searched internationally for recipes and from 1926 fudge was made, as well as the fruit caramel and peppermint caramel that was introduced from Poland. These sweets are still popular worldwide under the names Fruittella and Mentos.

The company found markets far beyond the borders and in 1935 even the first commercial aircraft of the Netherlands, the Double Eagle, was purchased. On 11 September 1944, however, Breskens was heavily bombed by the Allies, whereby the factory was also destroyed. Production was restarted in Rotterdam in 1946.
