Tartan
A tartan is a checkered woollen fabric, from which the Scottish kilt is made. The ancient Celts already wore plaid clothing and the good quality was even known in the Roman Empire.

The word tartan probably comes from the French word "tiretaine", which indicates a type of wool, or from the Gaelic word "breacan", which means speckled.

The pattern of a tartan is made by weaving coloured threads with alternating strips, both in the warp and in the weft, with right angles to each other. At the intersections of the same colour, it becomes brighter than when the wire crosses a different colour. The resulting colour blocks repeat themselves in the vertical and horizontal directions. Such weave patterns are already found in China in 3500 BC.
