Industrial design, also known as industrial (product) design, product design or (industrial) design, is the design of products that are manufactured industrially in mass or series production. Some examples of such products are the vacuum cleaner, the coffee machine, but also the rollator, laptop bags, and office chairs.

The development of industrial design was a consequence of the industrial revolution when it was switched from artisanal manufacture (each piece is unique) to series production (each piece was identical as intended by the designer).

Industrial design is the technical skill to determine the shape and function of an object or product. It is a difficult combination of aesthetic and functional properties of the product. It must be both beautiful and practical to use; in addition, it must also be producible (for a reasonable price).
