Verkade was founded on May 2, 1886. Then Ericus Gerhardus Verkade opened his Steam, Bread and Rusk factory “De Ruyter”. The name "De Ruyter" was chosen with a bow to the past; the first flour mill of West Zaandam bore that name. The products of the first hour were; bread, rusks, honey gingerbread and Langetjes, later the tea lights were added. "De Ruyter" is still recognizable in the logo of the Verkade brand. Over time, Verkade has switched to making cookies and chocolate.

Cornelis (Cees) Dekker (1900-1990) was a Dutch artist and advertising designer. He joined the Verkadefabriek in 1923 as the first designer, although he actually wanted to become an independent artist. He was associated with the company's advertising department for 30 years, most of which as chief. The Verkade family soon realized the influence of effective advertising. The large amount of paper and cardboard packaging, the biscuit tins and biscuit tins and posters that were designed by Cees Dekker were considerable. Particularly well-known are the advertising posters that praise tea lights, biscuits and long biscuits.

Verkade albums were created in 1903 when Verkade added images to their products that could be pasted into special albums. He started with three Fairy Tale albums, with pictures that were purchased in Germany. That was a great success and then Verkade decided to release other albums on various aspects of nature and the landscape in the Netherlands. Jac wrote for many of those albums. P. Thijsse the texts. More than three million albums were released until 1940 with around thirty million images.
