Tiktak
In 1870, Klaas Tiktak, a descendant of a seafaring family from Pekela, started a grocery store on Damsterdiep in the city of Groningen. Before that he had worked for a grocer and a tobacco trade. He soon roasted his own coffee and mixed tea.

Business went well and in 1902 the old building was replaced by a new factory in the same place. After the turn of the century the company was officially called Steam Coffee Roaster and Chinese Tea Trade "De Blauwe Haan"; this is because the grocery store that Klaas took over had already used the 'Blue Rooster' brand.

In 1911 the company became a public limited company and the management was taken over by two sons of Klaas Tiktak, Tonnis and Klaas Harmannus. Tonnis led the company in Groningen and Klaas Harmannus became director of the sales office in Amsterdam.

In 1916 founder Klaas Tiktak moved to Paterswolde and went to live in a spacious villa that he called "Java". Proud as he was in his name and achievements, he had a pond dug in the garden in the shape of a letter "T". Although the property is no longer inhabited by a descendant of the Tiktak family, the pond still exists. Klaas Tiktak died in 1926.

Although Klaas succeeded in building a Northern coffee empire out of nothing, the growth among his successors leveled off. His son Tonnis Hendrik was able to retain sales, but did not succeed in structurally increasing sales. As a result, competitor Douwe Egberts, for example, outperformed Tiktak in terms of sales.

Nevertheless, even under the third generation from 1938 to 1969, Tiktak remained an important player on the national coffee market.
