Description
Ashtray Ravelli 222. This ashtray comes from the Dutch pottery factory Potterie Ravelli in Valkenburg. The designer of this ashtray is Jaap Ravelli and the date of manufacture is around 1955.

This square ashtray is made of orange glazed earthenware with a dark brown edge on the top. Marked on the bottom with: Ravelli 222.

Condition
The ashtray is in a very neat vintage with normal traces of use and age-related traces of wear. Very neat condition without chips, cracks or other damage.

The Ravelli pottery was made in Leiden / Valkenburg in the period 1944-1977.

Ceramics and pottery by Jaap Ravelli is one of the most recognizable in the Dutch ceramics history of the twentieth century. His company in Valkenburg (ZH) existed between 1947 and 1977 and was responsible for a large number of mainly series-produced articles with which it played a major role in the design of the post-war Netherlands.

Pottery is a collective name for ceramics fired from clay at temperatures up to about 1100 degrees Celsius, such as crockery, pots, dishes, drinking cups, jars and tiles.

Earthenware is glazed or unglazed nonvitreous pottery that has normally been fired below 1200 °C. Porcelain, bone china, and stoneware, all fired at high enough temperatures to vitrify, are the main other important types of pottery.

Due to its porosity, earthenware, with a water absorption of 5-8%, must be glazed to be watertight. Earthenware has lower mechanical strength than bone china, porcelain or stoneware, and consequently articles are commonly made in thicker cross-section, although they are still more easily chipped.
