Amstel is a Heineken beer brand. It was first brewed in 1871 on the Mauritskade in Amsterdam by Beiersch-Bierbrouwerij De Amstel. Today, all Amstel beers are brewed in the Heineken breweries in Zoeterwoude, 's-Hertogenbosch and Wijlre.
In 1872, the Amstel Brewery brewed a million liters of lager. For cooling and storage of the lager, ice was taken from the Amsterdam canals and stored in special double-walled cellars.
In 1968 Amstel was taken over by the Amsterdam competitor Heineken. The brewery on the Mauritskade was demolished. Only the head office from 1930, now part of the Hogeschool van Amsterdam, has remained. The sculpture on the facade is by Gerarda Rueter. In September 1988 the brewery on the Stadhouderskade was closed and production in the Netherlands continued in both Zoeterwoude (pils) and 's-Hertogenbosch and Wijlre (special beers, such as bokbier).
