Hofnar is a brand of cigars and was one of the most important cigar factories in Valkenswaard.
The factory's origins date back to 1880, when Jacobus Heesterbeek founded a cigar factory after disagreements with his previous employer, the Texas cigar factories of Hoekx and Maas.
The seed capital was reportedly obtained through the sale of a calf. A dog cart was purchased with which Heesterbeek went off the barbers to sell cigars. In 1903 he founded a factory and after a few years he employed 40 people who produced cigars of the brand De Zakkenroller. A goat and a pig were also housed in a corner of the factory, because the starting manufacturer was also a farmer.
In 1911, a partner came in, Alex Wolters, son of a Venlo brewery. He had several years of experience in the cigar factory of Retera in Beek and took over the business management. The name of the company changed to J. Heesterbeek & Co. Also in 1911 a branch was founded in Bergeijk, which in 1923 was housed in a new factory. Brands such as De Oude Valk and Vrede were produced here.
When Wolters and his wife visited Giuseppe Verdi's opera Rigoletto in 1919, in which the court jester Rigoletto played such a tragic role, it was clear to him that the new brand would be called Hofnar. This turned out to be a success. The company name was eventually changed to N.V. Hofnar Sigarenfabrieken.
After Heesterbeek died in 1923, Wolters took over the business. The company grew into one of the largest cigar factories in the Netherlands, and just before the Second World War it employed 1,100 people. Cigars were also exported to various countries.
