Riley's Brothers
Halifax confectionery manufacturer Riley's Brothers (Halifax) Limited was founded by Fred Riley and his brother JH Riley in 1907. The company was famous for its Toffee Rolls which came in 7 flavours: original creamy, fig, date, licorice, golden cream, rum and butter, and mint & butter.
The works were originally in the family home until the factory moved to the Kingston Toffee Mills in Hopwood Lane in 1911, just around the corner from John Mackintosh's Chocolate Works on Queens Road. It was the Kingston Biscuit Factory before it became the pastry shop of Riley's Toffees. Like Mackintosh's Mill 9 years earlier, the mill was damaged by fire on January 2, 1918. He was famous for his 36-meter-high chimney with the name of the company in glazed white bricks, with each letter nearly 2 meters high.
When J.H. Riley died in 1953, the company was bought by Nuttall's. It was later bought by the Guinness Group and then by Callard & Bowser. Then in 1988 by United Biscuits / McVities and finally by the American giant Kraft.
In 2008, Freya Sykes, niece of the founders of Riley's Toffee, founded Ella Riley Ltd, named after the person who created Riley's own toffee recipe in her Economical Recipe Book. After Ella died, Freya's father gave her grandmother's recipe book. When she looked inside, she came across her toffee recipe, vaguely written in pencil. Freya acquired the rights to Riley's Toffee Rolls for a "modest" amount after Kraft made it clear that it had lost interest in the product.
Riley's Toffee Rolls were launched in 1907 and made by "Riley Brothers, (Halifax) Limited" according to a recipe given to them by their mother. The brothers were Fred Riley & J.H Riley. They were manufactured at their Hopwood Lane factory in Halifax, West Yorkshire, which is now a McVitie's site.
In 1953, following the death of J.H. Riley, the surviving brother, sold the company to Nuttalls and after a number of corporate purchases the company took control of Kraft PLC and produced it at the Callard & Bowser facility in their Bridgend plant.
In the mid-1990s, the decision was made to discontinue production of Riley's Toffee Rolls in favor of increased production of the Altoid coin.
In 2008, Freya Sykes discovered a recipe book called "Economical Cooking" given to her by her grandmother Ella Riley; in front was the handwritten recipe given to her by her uncles, Fred & J.H. Riley. The recipe was for the original Riley's Toffee Rolls and after applying for IP rights, the Riley Toffee Rolls was reborn, now with a slightly softer texture to match the modern taste.
