Niemeyer BV has long been a family business, resulting from a trade in colonial goods. This trade was founded by Meindert Niemeijer on March 25, 1819. The trade was then just outside the city and sold products from the colonies, including tobacco. The tobacco trade (the Wapen van Rotterdam) was expanded with the production of tobacco. In this way, the company had both the production and sale of carved tobacco in-house. After son Theodorus Niemeijer had taken over the company from his father, the company started producing for other companies in addition to its own production (of the brand 'the weapon of Rotterdam). 'De Bijenkorf' and 'de Tabakshandel' are some examples of this. The company also started producing coffee and tea.

During the Great Depression in 1932/1933, the company stopped producing cigarettes. The factory spaces were used for the production of coffee and tea.

The company survived the Second World War by manufacturing surrogate coffee and tea substitute (under the name Savora).

During the twentieth century the company grew. It took over several tobacco manufacturers in the city of Groningen, including F. Lieftinck, and also entered international markets. Due to the fierce competition from Douwe Egberts, the company had to stop selling coffee and tea in the 1960s.
