Bolletje history
Gerardus Johannes ter Beek (1843-1933) started a bakery shop at the Grotestraat in Almelo at the end of 1867, in a building that his father Albertus Antonius (1802-1868), who was a bread seller, had just before his death for him purchased. This company would be the start of a family business that would become known under the name Bolletje from the mid-20th century.

Gerardus' son Albert (1877-1958) continued his father's business, but focused more on baking rusk. Already in the 1920s he delivered these biscuits with the help of his cargo bike to Deventer. His wife was in the bakery shop in Almelo. Today, the Bolletje Winkel & Koffieschenkerij and the bakery museum De Meelzolder are located in this building. The couple had five sons and two daughters who initially all went to work in the family business. Eldest son Gerard ter Beek (1915-2006) became responsible for the bakery. After World War II, it was decided to tackle rusk production on a large scale.

In 1954 the five brothers started an industrial bakery on the Turfkade in Almelo. Johannes Antonius (Jan) ter Beek (1916-2006) was the initiator to change the brand name "Ter Beek's Rusk". Brother Gerard came up with the name "Bolletje". Bolletje developed into the country's largest rusk producer, partly thanks to a sophisticated advertising policy by Jan ter Beek with the cooperation of advertising agency De Zuil from Enschede. The company became famous for its advertising slogan: "I want Bolletje!", Later proclaimed the advertising slogan of the twentieth century. In 1962, a collaboration was started with the bakery company Bachman Bakeries, also located in Almelo, which was specialized in producing pretzels.

In 1975 Arks Bakkerijen B.V. taken over in Heerde. In 1978 a new rye bread factory was opened in Almelo. After that, countless other companies were bought, such as Tumro from Roermond, Smarius from Tilburg, Meursing from Amersfoort and Schriek's Koekfabriek from Oosterhout. In 1983 the Varopa brand was bought. In 1994 Kelderman Broodspecialiteiten BV from Naarden was taken over and in 2000 Jaffa Bakkerijen B.V. followed suit. from Amsterdam.
