The original Van Nelle advertisement

Van Nelle was a Rotterdam manufacturer of rolling tobacco, cigarettes, coffee and tea.

In 1782 Johannes van Nelle and his wife Hendrica started a coffee, tea and tobacco shop at the Leuvehaven in Rotterdam. After the death of Johannes van Nelle in 1811, his widow continued the shop. The widow also died in 1813. Son Johannes van Nelle Jr. and his brother-in-law Abraham Goedkoop continued the business under the name De Erven de Wed. J. van Nelle. After the death of Johannes van Nelle Jr., the Van der Leeuw family took a share in the firm in 1837. From 1845 Van Nelle was wholly owned by the Van der Leeuw family.

Jacobus Johannes van der Leeuw expanded the company between 1837 and 1881. He made worldwide trade contacts, founded his own plantations in the Dutch East Indies and expanded the shop into a factory for roasting coffee and processing tobacco and tea. Around the turn of the century, coffee and tea became increasingly important. Van Nelle was therefore very successful. The company distinguished itself through its own approach, with appealing advertising figures such as Piggelmee. The period around the Second World War was difficult for Van Nelle. But from the 1950s it went under the leadership of director J.P. Coelingh better again. The introduction of the first freshly ground vacuum-packed coffee under the name Supra in 1962 has contributed significantly to this.

In 1916, the Van Nelle firm bought a site along the Schie in what was then the municipality of Overschie. Here, under the direction of Cees van der Leeuw, the world-famous Van Nelle factory was built by J.A. Brinkman and L.C. van der Vlugt. This factory became the textbook example of the new building and was built between 1927 and 1929.

On October 1, 1954, the last Van der Leeuw retired from the management. Van Nelle then became a public limited company. In 1977, the American Standard Brands acquired all shares of Van Nelle after many years of cooperation. In 1985 the company became completely independent again - through a so-called management buy-out. In 1989 Van Nelle was taken over by competitor Sara Lee / Douwe Egberts. Douwe Egberts closed all production facilities and reduced Van Nelle to a brand name.
