Albert Heijn had been in Eindhoven with a number of shops since 1913, but on Wednesday 25 May 1966 the big grocer opened his first supermarket in Eindhoven. Incidentally, it was already the 52nd Albert Heijn supermarket in the country, so it was high time that a large city like Eindhoven would also have a branch.

It was already busy during the reception for the official opening on Tuesday afternoon, but the opening for the public on Wednesday exceeded all expectations. The sales space of 520 m2 soon proved to be too small. The large-scale advertising campaign was apparently so well received that a huge line of people were already waiting in the supermarket's car park at 10 o'clock in the morning. Four police officers were needed to ensure that everything went smoothly and the 1,500 cookie drums that were handed out to the first customers were all forgiven at half past one in the afternoon. The total of 5,400 different items went in large quantities to the seven cash registers that had to run with an additional occupation to process all the stored merchandise.

Manager of the new supermarket, mr. Fait, of course, was very happy with the enormous interest. The self-service supermarket, located on the Sint Petrus Canisiuslaan in Stratum, still exists today. Since 1966, the number of Albert Heijn supermarkets in Eindhoven has grown to eighteen.

Albert Heijn Sr. comes from the Heijn family from Oostzaan. In 1887 he took over his grocer's shop in the Kerkbuurt van Oostzaan from his father Jan Heijn. Eight years later he opened the first branch in Purmerend and in Zaandam he opened a Central Warehouse in 1899.

The basis for its own production companies was laid in 1911, also in Zaandam, where the kitchen of an old mansion started roasting coffee and baking cookies. In 1920 the Society for Exploitation of Factories and Trade Affairs was established.

Seven years later, in 1927, the retail chain existed for 40 years. The company now had 107 branches and received the title of purveyor to the supplier.

In 1952 Albert Heijn opened his first self-service store in Schiedam.
