A coffee bean is a seed of the coffee plant. These seeds are called coffee beans, but botanically this is not correct. The fruit of the coffee plant is a drupe, a fruit with a thick hard seed and a thin layer of pulp. However, this kernel (or seed) is very similar to a bean and is therefore called coffee bean. Coffee is made from the skinned, dried, roasted and ground seeds of the coffee plant.

The coffee berries need about eight months before they are ripe enough to be picked. In these eight months they change color from green to red. For the more expensive coffee, the berries are sometimes picked selectively, but usually all berries are picked, both the red and the green. After this, if necessary, a selection follows in which the lesser berries are thrown away.

Coffee is a drink, usually consumed hot, made from water and dried and roasted seeds of the coffee plant (Coffea spp.) Called coffee beans because of their shape. Coffee contains the stimulant and addictive agent caffeine. Most of the species in the genus Coffea are native to tropical Africa and the islands of the Indian Ocean. They originate in Ethiopia, Yemen and Sudan.

The coffee bean is an important export product of countries around the equator, such as Brazil, Vietnam and Colombia. Coffee plants are mainly cultivated on plantations in tropical countries, for export to countries with a temperate climate.
