Sunlight soap was made by the English Lever Brothers company from 1884 and was used as well for washing clothes as for general household use. It was William Lever who came up with the idea in 1884 to develop a good household soap, package it, give it a popular name and sell it at a fair price.

William Lever had this motto: "I want to make sure that it is clean everywhere, that women have less work, I want to promote health and make my contribution to personal care".

To market the Sunlight soap in the Netherlands, the Lever Brothers opened a sales office in Schiedam in 1907. In 1909, they bought a piece of land in Vlaardingen to establish their own factory in the Netherlands. It took until 1913 before the first pile was driven, and production started in 1917.

In 1930 Lever Brothers merged with Margarine Unie to form Unilever. The family brand Sunlight is one of Unilever's oldest brands.
