Brocante
The word brocante means: second-hand, old, curiosities.

The word "brocante" originally comes from French and literally translates as 'second hand' or 'flea market'. In The Netherlands 'brocante' often refers to products with an old and used appearance, such as a brocante old cabinet, table or mirror. Brocante are often old and have a lived-in character. Brocante are just not old enough to be seen as antique. Antiques must be at least 50 years old. There are two types of brocante: old and new brocante.

Old brocante are, as the word says, old, used and lived. For example, the paint has peeled off, cracks are visible or the legs are crooked. This gives the old brocante their characteristic and aged appearance, which creates a rural atmosphere. This gives brocante a casual and rural atmosphere to the interior, which makes brocante very popular. These minor "defects" of brocante are also a difference compared to antiques, where these types of "defects" are not wanted and are often repaired.

New brocante may be a strange term, because it was stated above that brocante are old. New brocante are therefore new products, but in the style of old brocante. For example, the paint on new brocante has been deliberately sanded to create the appearance of old brocante. This has a certain advantage: the new brocante do not have the 'defects' that old brocante can have, such as the drawers of the cupboard no longer close properly on a table that wobbles. So you have the appearance and atmosphere of an old brocante, but not the burdens and inconveniences of an old brocante.
