De Telegraaf was founded by esquire Henry Tindal and Gerard Adriaan Heineken, who in March 1892 bought an old printing works on the Gravenstraat in Amsterdam to transform it into one of the most modern printing houses in the country. This printing company, called the n.v. Electric Printing and Office Book Factory, was to be the first in the Netherlands to have a steam engine to generate electricity. The factory on Gravenstraat was not put into use until March 14, 1893, after its slow construction was completed. The magazine De Courant was also started at the same time. On January 1, 1893, the first issues appeared and were printed elsewhere until March 14, 1893.
