West German art pottery is essentially a term that describes the period from 1949-1990 and became the early way to describe this type of pottery. This was because the country of origin, with numbers indicating shape and size, was often the only "mark" on the underside. While company names are now more familiar and many items are attributed to specific makers, the more general term "West German pottery" is still widely used. "Fat Lava" is a popular term that strictly refers to a fairly small sub-category of glazes, but is all too often incorrectly used as a synonym for West Germany pottery. West Germany started in 1949: World War II ended in 1945, the next 4 years were the "zone" era with the country in the "US Zone", "Russian / Soviet Zone", "British Zone" and "French Zone" and it was 1949 when the East / West Division replaced the zones.

The work of the main producers in this style focused on some decorative items such as vases, jugs and bowls, rather than crockery. There were a relatively large number of basic shapes, and they were made of ordinary clay. These were heavily decorated, usually with a wide variety of glaze effects in more than one colour, many with thick preformed glazes. The products sometimes sported cast patterns or incised decorations (as in the 'Vetter' bowl), but glaze colours usually gave the impression that they were set by flow or brushing, rather than painting more precisely. Figurative decoration is not very common, and usually plant-based when it occurs.

A common style of basic sign was "W. Germany", xxx form number / or - xx height in cm. The name of the manufacturer was often worn on a self-adhesive sticker that was prominently attached to the product. These stickers have usually been lost over time.
