Crackle, craquelure or crackling refers to the appearance of small cracks in materials.

In painting, craquelure refers to small cracks in the canvas or panel that may indicate signs of aging. The layers of paint break loose from each other or even from the substrate.

The cause of crackle in old paintings is the phenomenon that layers of paint and varnish lose their elasticity over the years. The stretch and shrinkage that occurs in these materials due to differences in temperature or humidity then lead to small cracks or cracks, because the paint can no longer move with it. The surface can crack on wooden panels, which also causes cracks in the paint.

Crackle can also have various other causes. It can be caused by an incorrect binder / pigment ratio. The effect will occur even faster if the correct fat over lean technique is not applied, but if highly thinned paint has been applied over a greasier, more oily layer. Crackle can be counteracted by a restorer.

Too much use of siccative can also lead to crackle; this often happened in the 19th century. Varnishing before the paint is completely dry can also cause cracks.

It is possible to apply crackle intentionally; painting forgers do that, but it can also be harmless to give a new painting an older look. The paint is made harder by pouring it several times with hot water. The craquelure can then be engraved by hand. If the still wet layer of paint is finally put into the varnish much too early, results are assured.

On canvas, the cracks are also thin with thinly applied paint, but thicker layers of paint can lead to deep and wide crazing.
