Knorr is a food brand that became part of Unilever as a result of the acquisition of Bestfoods. Knorr is the largest individual brand in terms of turnover of all Unilever brands.
The company was founded in Heilbronn in 1838 by the German Carl Heinrich Knorr after he had started experimenting with drying food. His sons expanded the range further in 1870 with a mixture of dried vegetables and herbs that served as a flavor enhancer for soup.
The range has expanded over the years. Knorr was best known for dry soup mixes and stock cubes, later sauces and ingredients for international dishes were also added to the range.
Koloniale waren, Colonial goods are understood to mean a number of goods such as those that originated from the former colonies or were cultivated there. This mainly concerned foodstuffs and stimulants such as coffee, tea, cocoa, tobacco, sugar, cane, spices, potatoes and palm oil. Sometimes textile or similar products from the colonies were also sold.
The term was certainly already used in the 18th century, both in the Netherlands and in Flanders.
Wholesale firms in colonial goods existed and, as these goods became available to a wider audience, retailers also appeared in many places. However, as the means of transport became cheaper, the more or less adventurous nature of this trade disappeared, and with it the need for specialization in these types of products. The shopkeepers broadened their range to, for example, groceries. However, some firms gradually specialized in one particular product, such as coffee or textiles. Naturally, the larger companies also took care of the processing.
The trade in colonial goods was very profitable to some firms and made a fortune. Various large companies, such as Douwe Egberts (coffee), Van Nelle (coffee, tea and tobacco), and Colruyt (department store chain) have emerged from trade in colonial goods.
However, the term "colonial goods" disappeared. It still lives on in some old buildings, some inscriptions and in some literary works.
