Tobacco factory F. Lieftinck Groningen
The tobacco industry, often linked to other 'stimulants' such as coffee and tea, was a thriving branch of activity in the city of Groningen in the 19th century. An example of such a company is warehouse and former tobacco factory De Nijverheid, located in an inner courtyard behind the Oosterstraat and built in 1893 to a design by architect J.P. Hazeu.
The client was tobacco manufacturer J. H. Lieftinck. His family was from Drenthe, which explains why his trademark was "the coat of arms of Drenthe." For the realization of this building, Lieftinck also had a tobacco factory on Raamstraat near Herepoort. In 1932 the Lieftinck Company was taken over by competitor Theodorus Niemeijer.
Patina is a thin layer that variously forms on the surface of copper, brass, bronze and other metals (tarnish produced by oxidation or other chemical processes), or certain stones, and wooden furniture (sheen produced by age, wear, and polishing), or any similar acquired change of a surface through age and exposure.
Patinas can provide a protective covering to materials that would otherwise be damaged by corrosion or weathering. They may also be aesthetically appealing.
