Description
Rectangular flattened vintage tin with rounded corners and a slightly convex lid. On the lid, in white relief, an Asian woman, kneeling or on her lower legs, holding a bowl of cocoa fruits in her raised hands. This image is framed in black with the text "TJOKLAT chocolate". The lid is framed with an oriental inspired decoration. The outside of the lid and the lid rim are finished with a lace-like decoration.

Tjoklat was a chocolate factory founded by Willem Cornelis Sickesz junior (1886-1971) on 2 June 1924 in Amsterdam as a limited company. The original name of the factory was Holland (sch) -Zwitsersche Chocolate Factory Amsterdam. The main products were chocolate bars and pastilles (chocolates).

In 1925 the factory already produced 63 million bars under the name Dutch-Swiss chocolate bar. The first products with the brand name Tjoklat do not appear on the market until September 1936. "Tjoklat" was the Malay word for "chocolate". Since then, the mark depicted a kneeling Indonesian woman holding a bowl of cocoa fruit in her hands. It was a design by the office of the graphic designer Jannes de Vries. The draftsman was probably the painter Berend Hoving, born in Oosterhesselen. The model was the English Mady Townsend, a good friend of W.C. Sickesz junior. All Tjoklat products were prepared with Indian cane sugar. Even before the Second World War, a series of white bakelite boxes (oval and round) with pastilles were released, with the mark made as a cameo.

After the war, the factory with the Tjoklat mark gained its greatest fame. In 1950 the factory changed its name to Tjoklat-Fabriek NV Amsterdam. Bakelite boxes were replaced by embossed tin boxes. In 1972 the factory was changed into a private company and the name changed to Tjoklat B.V. In 1974 Meneba took over the Tjoklat chocolate factory. The factory in Amsterdam was demolished in 1978, seven years after the founder's death. In 1984, Baronie-De Heer took over the chocolate factory in Vlaardingen in Alphen aan den Rijn. The Tjoklat brand name and mark are still used today.
