Rien Poortvliet
Marinus Harm (Rien) Poortvliet (Schiedam, August 7, 1932 - Soest, September 15, 1995) was a Dutch illustrator, draftsman and painter.
As a plasterer's son from Schiedam, Poortvliet did not seem destined for an existence as an artist. His parents were strictly Reformed and did not like the idea that their eldest son would go to an art academy.
Poortvliet's drawing talent manifested itself in his youth. After secondary school, the young Poortvliet went to work at an advertising agency. After completing military service in the Navy, he rose to senior manager at Unilever's advertising agency.
Poortvliet enjoyed his side activities for various publishers more. He illustrated books by Jaap ter Haar, Leonard Roggeveen and Godfried Bomans, among others. He was a passionate hunter and started drawing nature subjects.
In the late 1960s, Poortvliet had reached the point that he thought he could quit his job to establish himself as an independent illustrator. He did not have enough work and in order to earn a living, he compiled a book with self-made drawings and watercolors based on his hunting experiences. Later he also made a similar work about the life of Jesus of Nazareth.
Poortvliet saw himself as a drawing storyteller. His drawings told the story. At most he wrote a short caption for explanation.
