A pastel is a soft colour that is obtained by mixing a pure pigment with a light colour, usually with white or light yellow.
Pastel colours are widely used in clothing for young children. Newborn babies are traditionally dressed in soft blue or pink. However, a pastel version can be made of all colours.
Originally pastel is the French name for widow blue, a dye that was extracted from the plant woad (Isatis tinctoria), until this dye was replaced by the better dye indigo.
However, a drawing with pastels does not necessarily have only pastel colours, with pastels you can also make very bright colours.
