Set of three original vintage pan coasters from the 60s and 70s and made of raffia. These still very popular coasters come in different shapes and various colours. The raffia is rolled up and has different colours that create a geometric pattern. Raffia is a material that is reminiscent of reed or thin rattan. These braided raffia discs are usually twisted from a centre and braided further.

The pan coasters are used as usual to place under a warm pan, in order to protect the table or the counter from the heat of the pan. Not only extremely functional, but also a very Dutch cosy.

In colour combinations of green, natural, blue and red.

Condition
These original coasters from the 1960s - 1970s are in a vintage condition with light traces of use and age-related traces of wear.

Raffia palms (Raphia) are a genus of about twenty species of palms native to tropical regions of Africa, and especially Madagascar, with one species (R. taedigera) also occurring in Central and South America. R. taedigera is the source of raffia fibers, which are the veins of the leaves.

Raffia fibre is widely used throughout the world. It is used in twine, rope, baskets, placemats, hats, shoes, and textile.

The fibre is produced from the membrane on the underside of each individual frond leaf. The membrane is taken off to create a long thin fibre which can be dyed and woven as a textile into products ranging from hats to shoes to decorative mats.

Plain raffia fibres are exported and used as garden ties or as a "natural" string in many countries. Especially when one wishes to graft trees, raffia is used to hold plant parts together as a more "natural" rope.
