Koninklijke De Ruijter is a producer of typical Dutch spreads, such as chocolate sprinkles, fruit hail, mice (muisjes), chocolate flakes, anise hail and mashed mice (gestampte muisjes).

De Ruijter's slogan is: "De Ruijter, the breadmaker since 1860," the year in which the company was founded by C.R. (Cees) de Ruijter.

De Ruijter's foundation was laid in 1860 in the front house of a former farm on Brinkstraat in Baarn. There, 24-year-old Cornelis Rutgerus De Ruijter started a pastry shop.

C.R. de Ruijter opens pastry shop in 1860 in the Brinkstraat in Baarn and starts the production and sale of birth mice. De Ruijter's foundation was laid in 1860 in the front house of a former farm on Brinkstraat in Baarn. There, 24-year-old Cornelis Rutgerus De Ruijter started a pastry shop, after he had learned the trade at a prominent Utrecht pastry chef.

There he was initiated into the secrets of the preparation of "birth mice", anise seeds with many layers of sugar around them, creating small white and pink balls. These were eaten on buttered rusks at the birth of a child. The mice of C.R. De Ruijter was at least as much appreciated by the seated citizenry as his pastries and bonbons. Moreover, shortly afterwards a variant of the birth mouse came into existence when a few older ladies, who found the sugared anise seeds hard for their teeth, brought him to the idea of crushing the mouse in the mortar.

That is how the famous, stamped Muisjes, were born after that time. The name of the sandwich filling "Roze and Witte muisjes" refers to the time when the product was first produced when people wrote pink (Rose) with an "s".
