Fisher-Price was founded in 1930 by Herman Fisher, Helen Schelle, Irving Price and his wife Margaret Evans Price. The name came about by combining two of the founders' three surnames. Fisher had previously gained experience in the production and sale of games, while Schelle had had his own toy store.

The first toys were made of sturdy metal and wood from the yellow pine, which hardly shattered. Sales went well from almost the beginning. Fisher-Price started producing plastic toys from the early 1950s. In the following decade, a new toy line was launched. With the Play Family, now known as Little People, Fisher-Price would grow into a world-renowned brand.

Herman Fisher retired in 1969 at the age of 71 as the last founder. Quaker Oats Company bought the company that same year. Fisher-Price went public in 1991, but came into the hands of Mattel in 1993 and with it disappeared from the stock exchange.

Since its inception, Fisher-Price has marketed approximately five thousand different types of toys.
