Pieter de Hooch, also spelled "Hoogh" or "Hooghe"; 20 December 1629 (baptized) – 24 March 1684 (buried)) was a Dutch Golden Age painter famous for his genre works of quiet domestic scenes with an open doorway. He was a contemporary of Jan Vermeer in the Delft Guild of St. Luke, with whom his work shares themes and style.
De Hooch was born in Rotterdam to Hendrick Hendricksz de Hooch, a bricklayer, and Annetge Pieters, a midwife. He was the eldest of five children and outlived all of his siblings.
The early work of de Hooch was mostly composed of scenes of soldiers and peasants in stables and taverns in the manner of Adriaen van Ostade, though he used these to develop great skill in light, colour, and perspective rather than to explore an interest in the subject.
After starting his family in the mid-1650s, he switched his focus to domestic scenes. These were possible of his own family, though his works of well-to-do women breastfeeding and caring for children could also indicate that he had attended his mother on her rounds as a midwife.
Pieter de Hooch (Rotterdam, November 20, 1629 - March 24, 1684 in the Dolhuis in Amsterdam) is a Dutch painter. His name is also written as Pieter de Hoogh, Pieter de Hooghe and Pieter Hendricksz. the Hooch.
Frans Hals (Antwerp, 1582/1583 - Haarlem, August 26, 1666) is one of the most important Old Dutch Masters. As far as is known, he worked in Haarlem all his life and was best known for his lively and colourful militia pieces and images of contemporaries.
Antoon van Dyck, also Anthony van Dyck, (Antwerp, March 22, 1599 - London, December 9, 1641) was a South Netherlandish Baroque painter from the Antwerp School. His first name is also mentioned as Anthonis, Antonio, Anthonie or Anton.
Antoon van Dyck mainly painted portraits, but also pieces with a religious or mythological subject. His works belong to the Baroque era. Many consider him the greatest Baroque painter from the Southern Netherlands after Rubens.
His style was initially strongly influenced by Rubens, but later, during a stay in Italy, he also admired Titian, which is reflected in many of his paintings.
Van Dyck was a great influence on English portrait painting, and some historians consider him the founder of the English school of painting.
