Raphael (Urbino, April 6, 1483 - Rome, April 6, 1520) was an Italian painter and architect of the High Renaissance. In addition to frescoes, altarpieces and portraits, he has made designs for churches, palazzos and tapestries. One of his most famous works is the Sistine Madonna.

The Sistine Madonna is an oil painting by the Italian painter Raphael, completed in 1513 or 1514. It depicts a classic Madonna with the Christ Child, dressed in red and blue, flanked by Saint Sixtus and Saint Barbara. It is considered one of the most famous paintings of the Italian Renaissance, partly because of the iconic image of the two angels at the bottom.

The Sistine Madonna is originally an altarpiece. It features a classic Madonna with the Christ Child, dressed in red and blue, flanked by Saint Sixtus and Saint Barbara.

A special position in the painting is occupied by the two plump angels or putti, symbols of innocence, who seem to lean on the altar at the bottom of the painting. They seem to look more at Barbara than at Maria, who in turn looks back down. Compositionally, the two figures close the image from below, creating a closed whole. Over time (dating back to the early nineteenth century, when the German painter August von der Embde began to copy them on a relatively large scale), the two angels have come to fulfill an iconic function in Western culture. Today they appear on posters, postcards, coffee mugs, T-shirts and so on.
