Petroleum set or paraffin burner in reseda green enamelled metal, three-burner with wick. Original putter.

  • Manufacturer: Made in the Netherlands by De Putter
  • Date of manufacture: 1900 - 1930

Comes with three cotton wicks (wicks) and is immediately ready for use after filling with petroleum or lamp oil.

Description
Three-burner petroleum set consisting of four separate parts. Reseda green enamel and with black buttons. The window or sight glass is still completely intact. Inscription: ORIGINAL PUTTER.

This paraffin stove is still completely original with the cast iron hanging step and pan ring.

In the period 1880-1930, cooking in the Dutch Zuiderzee area was mainly done with petroleum sets and stoves. Thanks to the arrival of town gas, butane gas and later natural gas, the petroleum stove disappeared out of the kitchen. This set consists of an enamelled reservoir for the kerosene, in which hang three wicks: cotton bands that suck the kerosene from below and are lit at the top. The reservoir is covered with an enamelled plate with slots for the wicks. It has an attachment with viewing window and a grid for a pan or kettle. If you turn the burner up, the flame will burn faster and give off more heat. If you turn the pit down deep enough, the flame will go out.

Condition
This beautiful petroleum set is in a neat vintage condition with normal traces of use and age-related traces of wear. Photos are part of description.

A petroleum set or oil set (also known as a peter oil set) is a cooking appliance that uses petroleum as fuel. With the arrival of town gas, butane gas and later natural gas, this way of cooking has practically disappeared.

The appliance consists of an enamelled reservoir for the petroleum, in which one or more wicks hang. A wick is an approximately 7 cm wide cotton belt that absorbs the fuel. The reservoir is covered with an enamelled plate (the wick holder) which is designed with one or more chimney-shaped, often 7 cm long slots, through which the wicks pass and which can be adjusted in height with the aid of the rotating devices also placed therein. An enamelled attachment (the chalice) is placed on top of the reservoir. On top of this is a grid or trivet on which the pan or kettle can be placed. In the front of the chalice is a glass covered viewing hole, through which the height of the flame can be checked. The wick can be turned upwards, so that the flame burns higher and more heat is released. However, if it is set too high, the flame will smoke: producing soot. To extinguish the flame, the wick is turned down until the flame goes out.

A petroleum set is ideally suited for simmering stew meat and stewed pears, among other things.
