A coffee filter is a paper filter that is used to separate the coffee grounds from the coffee. The coffee made in this way is known as filter coffee.

The best-known system is the so-called Melitta filter. This filter was invented by the housewife Melitta Bentz from Dresden, who obtained a patent for it on July 8, 1908. She came up with the idea because she was annoyed by coffee grounds in the cups. She invented a paper filter, made from tissue paper from her son's school notebook, which she placed in a metal dish in which she had poked holes. When she received compliments from her ladies' wreath, she decided to apply for a patent. That same year she started a business.

Melitta Bentz
Amalie Auguste Melitta Bentz, born Amalie Auguste Melitta Liebscher (Dresden, January 31, 1873 – Porta Westfalica, June 29, 1950) is the inventor of the coffee filter.

Melitta Bentz was annoyed by the coffee grounds that were inextricably linked to making coffee. She thought that a filter would be the solution and used a brass dish in which she punched holes. In it, she placed a blotting paper from her son's school notebook. By placing ground coffee in it and pouring it over with water, she was able to make coffee without sludge. Her invention was enthusiastically welcomed at a coffee party with friends. On June 20, 1908, she obtained the patent for the coffee filter.

For the production of porcelain coffee filter holders and white crockery intended for coffee drinks, Melitta founded a factory called Friesland in 1953 for those goods in Varel. This subsidiary was divested again in 1991.

In addition to producing metal filters, from 1919 the company also supplied aluminium and porcelain filters that were produced by third parties. These filters ensured less aftertaste to the coffee.
