Albert Heijn had been in Eindhoven since 1913 with a number of shops, but on Wednesday, May 25, 1966, the grocer opened its first supermarket in Eindhoven. Incidentally, it was already the 52nd Albert Heijn supermarket in the country, so it was high time that a large city like Eindhoven also got a branch.

The reception for the official opening on Tuesday afternoon was already very busy, but the opening to the public on Wednesday exceeded all expectations. The sales area of 520 m2 soon turned out to be far too small. The large-scale advertising campaign was apparently so successful that at 10 a.m. there was already a huge queue of people waiting in the parking lot of the supermarket. Four police officers were needed to ensure that everything ran smoothly and the 1500 biscuit tins that were handed out to the first customers were all gone at half past two in the afternoon. The total of 5400 different items went in large quantities through the seven cash registers that had to run with an extra staff to process all purchased merchandise.

Manager of the new supermarket, mr. Fait, of course, was very pleased with the enormous interest. The self-service supermarket, located at Sint Petrus Canisiuslaan in Stratum, still exists today. Since 1966, the number of Albert Heijn supermarkets in Eindhoven has grown to eighteen.

Brocante is a French term used to refer to antique or vintage objects that have often been collected and sold for their decorative value and charm. These items are usually old, but not necessarily antique, and often have a patina or weathered look that gives them a sense of history and character.

Brocante items can often be found at flea markets, antique fairs and thrift stores. The items can range from furniture and lighting to decorative accessories such as mirrors, vases, candlesticks and clocks. Often they are pieces collected by collectors or left over from old houses and farms.

Many people appreciate brocante for the unique and authentic look of the items, which evoke a sense of history and nostalgia. Brocante items are often used to add a rustic, vintage or country look to an interior.
