Douwe Egberts originated when Egbert Douwes and his wife Akke Thysses started a "store in colonial goods" on March 11, 1753. Douwes and his wife sold items that belong to 'the pleasures of daily life'.
In 1780, the company was transferred to son Douwe Egberts (1755-1806) - whose name the company still carries - and his wife Ymke Jacobs Visser. They engaged in the processing and melking of coffee, tea and tobacco.
After World War II, the company began to open international expansion through branches in France, Spain and Denmark, and from 1948 in Belgium.
