De Spar is an international chain of supermarkets, founded in 1932 by Adriaan van Well.

It is usually said that De Spar is an abbreviation of the motto "By Eendrachtig Samenwerken Profiteren Allen Regular". In that case the article is therefore an essential part of the name. According to others, the name "De Spar" was chosen at random because founder Van Well had signed a spruce tree in the minutes of the founding meeting, or for some other reason, in which case the motto was coined to accompany the name, a backronym.

When Spar stores started in Germany, the word "De" was dropped. In some countries, including Italy, the name De Spar has continued to be used.

In German, the name Spar suggests another meaning: Spaar. Yet the chain also uses the same logo there with a green-circled spruce tree (although such a tree is called 'Tanne' in German). The current logo was designed in 1968 by Raymond Loewy.

Some stores have a liquor store called Le Sapin. That is the French translation of De Spar.

Speculaas mold - Cookie mold
Speculaas molds were cut by bakers. These so-called cake boards have a carved image with which cakes could be produced.

Wood was used to produce a biscuit board. In this, a cake had to be cut out of a fixed volume, because the cakes had to have a fixed weight. First, the rough shape was cut out to achieve this volume, after which the finer work was continued, which meant hardly any extra volume.

A number of logical requirements were imposed on the wood that could be used, such as workability, strength and in addition the wood must be dense. Because pine wood contains a relatively large amount of resin, this could not be used, for example, as that would then absorb the taste. Ash, teak and walnut, for example, could be used very well.
