Van Nelle was a Rotterdam manufacturer of rolling tobacco, cigarettes, coffee and tea.

In 1782 Johannes van Nelle and his wife Hendrica started a coffee, tea and tobacco shop at the Leuvehaven in Rotterdam. After the death of Johannes van Nelle in 1811, his widow continued the shop. The widow also died in 1813. Son Johannes van Nelle Jr. and his brother-in-law Abraham Goedkoop continued the business under the name De Erven de Wed. J. van Nelle. After the death of Johannes van Nelle Jr., the Van der Leeuw family took a share in the firm in 1837. From 1845 Van Nelle was wholly owned by the Van der Leeuw family.

Jacobus Johannes van der Leeuw expanded the company between 1837 and 1881. He made worldwide trade contacts, founded his own plantations in the Dutch East Indies and expanded the shop into a factory for roasting coffee and processing tobacco and tea. Around the turn of the century, coffee and tea became increasingly important. Van Nelle was therefore very successful.

The company distinguished itself by its own approach, with appealing advertising figures such as Piggelmee. The period around the Second World War was difficult for Van Nelle. But from the 1950s it went under the leadership of director J.P. Coelingh better again.
