Koninklijke Utermöhlen NV (formerly Utermöhlen & Co.) is a supplier and manufacturer of, among other things, wound care products. The company was founded in Amsterdam in 1880 by Carl Friedrich Utermöhlen who acquired a license from a German company that produced antiseptic dressings using the Lister method. After a difficult start, partly because the new article was not immediately adopted in medical practice, a new factory building on the Weesperzijde was put into use in 1897. In 1898 the company was converted into a public limited company, still under the direction of the founder. Following the development of the quick bandage in 1901, Queen Wilhelmina awarded the company the Royal designation and was given the name NV Koninklijke Fabriek van Verbandstoffen v / h Utermöhlen & Co. In 1907 a separate company was opened in Emst for medicinal bandages. This later became a subsidiary.

Strong growth led to Utermöhlen being listed on the Amsterdam stock exchange in the late 1940s. Post-war growth led to the opening of a new factory on Molukkenstraat in Amsterdam in 1955. Among other things, it housed a band weaving mill for hydrophilic bandages. In addition, the NV had depots in The Hague and Rotterdam. From 1961, the products were introduced in Belgium and Luxembourg, which led to the establishment, in early 1967, of Utermöhlen International SA, with a production site in Bruggenhout. In 1990 the company became part of the pharmacy wholesaler OPG, after which it was split up. The slimmed-down company became independent again in 1998 after a management buy-out.

Utermöhlen was located in Amsterdam until 1989, until 1955 on the Weesperzijde and then in a newly built factory on the Molukkenstraat. The company has been located in Wolvega in Frisian since 1989. In addition to the trade in first-aid kits under the Utermöhlen brand name, Koninklijke Utermöhlen carries the brands HeltiQ for wound care products and ByeBites for remedies against insect stings and bites for the drugstore and pharmacy market.
