A paraffine stove or oil set (also called peter oil set) is a cooking appliance that uses petroleum as fuel. With the advent of town gas, butane gas and later natural gas, this method of cooking has practically disappeared.
The appliance consists of an enamelled petroleum reservoir, in which one or more wicks hang. A wick is an approximately 7 cm wide cotton band that sucks up the fuel. The reservoir is covered with an enamelled plate (the wick holder) which is designed with one or more chimney-shaped slots, often 7 cm long, through which the wicks pass and which can be adjusted in height with the aid of the rotary devices also placed therein. An enamelled attachment (the chalice) has been placed on top of the reservoir. On top of this is a grid or trivet on which the pan or kettle can be placed. In the front of the chalice is a glass covered viewing hole, through which the height of the flame can be checked. The wick can be turned upwards so that the flame will burn higher and more heat is released. However, if this is set too high, the flame will smoke: produce soot. To extinguish the flame, the wick is turned down until the flame goes out.
A paraffin stove is ideally suited for simmering stews and stewed pears, among other things.
